ABOUT THIS GUIDANCE

The importance of Maths for brain development has been mentioned in many research papers and articles. If developed at an early age, mathematics can greatly enhance the creativity of a child. Equally important is how maths is taught to students, as passion (for the subject) is key. We focus on teaching students the core mathematics principles required from Key Stage 1 - 4 per the National Curriculum of England & Wales.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

In the Mathematics sessions, a student will be taken through the basics of Key Stage 1 right through to the complexities of Key Stage 4 as required per the latest version of the National Curriculum of England & Wales. A student will be taught all the necessary concepts and will be taken through previous test papers. Below highlights some of the topics that will be covered:

Key Stage 1 (Year 1 - 2)

By the end of KS1, students should be fluent with whole numbers, counting and place value. This should involve working with numerals, words and the 4 operations, including practical problems using concrete objects and measuring tools to derive length, mass, volume, capacity, money etc.

Key Stage 2 (Year 3 - 6)

Lower Key Stage 2 (Year 3 - 4)
The students should achieve fluency with whole numbers and the 4 operations, including number facts and concept of place value. Performing written & mental methods, as well as accurate calculations using larger numbers, is taught. Simple fractions, decimal places and mathematical reasoning are used to analyse shapes and their properties. Students are expected to remember multiplication tables up to 12.

Upper Key Stage 2 (Year 5 - 6)
Prime focus in upper KS2 is to ensure understanding of the number system and place value to include larger integers. This includes multiplication and division with fractions, decimals, percentages and ratio. Introduction to algebra, geometry and measures would consolidate and extend knowledge developed in number.

Key Stage 3 (Year 7 - 9)

KS3 is organised into distinct areas. Students continue to build on their KS2 skills and develop fluency, mathematical reasoning and competency in solving increasingly sophisticated problems. They would apply their mathematical knowledge in science, geography, computing and other subjects.

Key Stage 4

The mathematical content of KS3 and KS4 covers the full range of material contained in the IGCSE Mathematics exams. It includes, but is not limited to the below:

  • - Understanding the number system including powers, roots and fractional indices.
  • - Quadratic equations, simultaneous equations and inequalities.
  • - Proofs: use of algebra to support and create arguments
