It is not just useful during a student's learning stage but very important in one's adult life. Imagine if as an adult, one only grasps 50-60% of what (s)he hears or reads and based on that, has to complete a task at work. While writing & communication skills are important, comprehending & understanding what you listen & read is equally important.

WHAT'S INCLUDED

Below highlights some of the topics that will be covered:

Key Stage 1 (Year 1 - 2)

In KS1, students should develop their reading skills and take pleasure in the same. They should also develop their listening skills and ability to express their views. They should also be able to read independently and discuss the sequence of events in a book, as well as participate in discussions on what may happen next, based on what they have read so far. The aim is to develop their inquisitive nature to ask questions on what words mean, and linking these 'newly' learnt words to ones they already know. They should also continue building up a repertoire of poems learnt by heart, enjoying these and reciting some, with the appropriate tone of voice to make the meaning clear.

Key Stage 2 (Year 3 - 6)

By this stage, students should have developed a passion for reading, and an understanding of what they read, by listening to and discussing a wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference books or textbooks. They should also read for various purposes. By now, they should be familiar with the use of a dictionary to check meanings of words they are unfamiliar with. They should also identify themes and conventions from various books. They should be able to discuss words/phrases that capture their interest. In parallel, they should be able to prepare poems and play scripts to read aloud and to perform, showing their understanding through the use of tone, volume and gestures.
Finally, they should understand what they independently read in the books. They should not only be able to answer questions but draw inferences such as characters’ feelings, thoughts and motives from their actions. Structurally, they should identify how language, structure, and presentation contribute to meaning.

Key Stage 3 (Year 7 - 9)

By the end of KS3, students should have developed a passion & love for reading challenging material independently. They should have achieved the following objective: (i) independent reading of fiction/non-fiction - whole books/short stories/poems/plays/history/English literature such as Shakespeare, (ii) having independent choice of books for interest and leisure (iii) reading books again to enhance familiarity to them and comparisons, (iii) understanding difficult texts through learning new vocabulary and relating it to existing vocabulary, (iv) drawing conclusions on the reason, audience and context of the writing and drawing on this knowledge to support comprehension, and (v) critically evaluating their own language, grammar, vocabulary, text, organisational flow and plot.

Key Stage 4

By KS4, students should be able to understand and critically evaluate texts. They should (i) know different ways of reading for various purposes, summarising ideas and information and evaluating it for drawing various conclusions, (ii) targeting the purposes, audience and context of the writing (social, historical or cultural), (iii)interpreting themes, ideas & information, thereby discovering areas of plot, characterisation, events & settings, the correlation between them and effects (iv) looking for evidence in the text to support a point of view, distinguishing between statements supported by their respective evidence and those that are not, and identifying bias or misuse of evidence, and (v) analysing writer’s vocabulary, form, grammatical and structural features, to draw learnings & impact.
